Submissions are open once again at Podcastle. I've been an Associate Editor there since 2019, have read countless stories, and know what will improve your chances of being selected for our magazine.
Please please please read the guidelines. It tells you what Podcastle is and isn't looking for. For example, we are open to fantasy fiction of all subgenres, from cozy to grimdark. Reprints and never-before-published works are both welcome. To learn more, read the guidelines here.
If you prefer submitting your work somewhere else, read their guidelines. Pay attention to genre, author demographics, word count, and potential hard sells. In theory, sending your work means there's a chance, no matter how small, of getting published. I've also seen people submit non-fiction and job applications through fiction submission portals. Those got rejected very quickly.
Please be honest with your submission. If you lie that your word count is within acceptable limits, then send something well over the limit, you will get rejected. Same with submission periods meant to highlight nonbinary, disabled, PoC, or other authors. If you're not part of the demographic, but send your story in anyway, it is a very bad look for you, and you'll get turned down.
Don't self-reject. If you have a story along the lines of what we want, send it in and see what happens. All we ask is that you use sense about what you submit.
